Chico Mendes

Chico Mendes was a Brazilian rubber tapper, union leader, and environmental activist who fought to preserve the Amazon rainforest and advocated for the human rights of the people who lived in the area.

Mendes was an internationally awarded and acclaimed activist and the target of constant threats for years until he was assassinated by a rancher in late 1988. He left a timeless legacy for Brazil’s environmental and labor movements.
