Hattie was an American environmentalist who organized her neighborhood to form a Committee responsible for planting more than 1,500 trees – including ginkgos, sycamores, and honey locusts, in response to the destruction of trees caused by apartment developers as the city grew back in the ’70s. She has also founded the Magnolia Tree Earth Center, and along with the Hattie Carthan Community Garden and Market, it carries on her legacy of tree care and sustainability.
